When the American Line opened its doors in the heart of Oslo, an icon from Norway's maritime history was reborn – now as a world-class boutique hotel. The historical headquarters of the Norwegian American Line was given new life, and the interior was to reflect the unique story of travel, dreams, and the meeting of continents. At Sifab, we were responsible for both the fixed and loose furnishings in the hotel's public spaces and guest rooms – a task where authenticity, craftsmanship, and respect for the building's heritage went hand in hand with modern functionality.

Background

Amerikalinjen is a hotel that proudly carries its history. The culturally and historically protected building from the early 20th century required solutions that both preserved and enhanced its original character. Our biggest challenge was to unite the classical with the contemporary – to create a warm and elegant environment where the romance of travel meets modern comfort. In close collaboration with the design team and the builder, we developed interior details that reinforce the hotel's identity: dark woods, brass details, and bespoke joinery that exude both tradition and exclusivity. Every surface and material choice conveys a sense of authenticity – as if everything has been there since the house was built.

Process

The project was characterized by precision and a sense of touch. Our craftsmen combined traditional techniques with modern production to recreate period-specific expressions while meeting today's demands for sustainability, fire safety, and durability. The fixed furnishings were manufactured with a focus on exact fits, tactile surfaces, and harmonious transitions between old and new. Throughout the process, the emphasis was on the interplay between history and the present – between the adventures of seafaring and the urban elegance that characterizes today's Oslo. The result is an environment that feels natural, timeless, and vibrant. A hotel where every detail bears the marks of craftsmanship and storytelling – and where our efforts help to keep the legacy of the American Line alive for a new generation of travelers.
